    Penelope Freedman Runner

    Hometown: Buena Vista, CO

Interests: Trail Running, Snowboarding, Hiking, Mountain Biking

For the last 20 years Penelope has traveled the world competing as a competitive snowboarder and trail runner. She's lived, trained, and coached on multiple continents, but has been in Colorado for the last 10 years (recently moving from Steamboat Springs to Vail) after having absolutely fallen in love with the steep lines, high peaks, and endless terrain of the Rocky Mountains. She's specifically drawn to backcountry riding in the San Juan, Sawatch, and Gore ranges. She absolutely loves backcountry/split-board missions and is completely committed to spending the rest of her snowboard career deep in the mountains exploring new lines, educating new riders in avalanche safety, and encouraging more women to safely explore backcountry terrain.

Trail running has also become a huge passion for Penelope and has given her the opportunity to train and race all around the world. She recently returned from Europe where several countries sponsored her at their trail races and she also volunteered for a week at UTMR as head "chef" for all the athletes and volunteers.

As much as she loves winning races, the thing she prefers more is the strong sense of camaraderie, love and selfless support that the volunteers and fellow trail runners provide. One important goal Penelope has for 2022 is to volunteer more at trail running events. In her free time, she loves hiking, mountain biking, continuing her practice of Kungfu (even though she has a blackbelt the practice never ends!), and chasing her adorable puppy Salty through the mountains. She also owns and operates a small vegan food company called Kenchuto Bliss and is passionate about supporting local agriculture. Another new venture for her in 2022 is starting nursing school!
